Blinds Guide

Blinds are used allow just the right amount of light into the house.  Blinds can also provide privacy.  There are many types of blinds.  The most common blinds today are venetian blinds (horizontal slat blinds) or horizontal blinds.  Blinds also have the ability to block the sun and provide shade while allowing air to flow through (if the window is open) keeping the room cool and preventing stagnant air.  Blinds come in almost any size and can be applied to windows on doors and sliding glass doors.

About Blinds

Most horizontal blinds are made of strips (slats) most often made of vinyl or wood.  They are held in place between two cords that run the height of the blinds.  Each slat is tied to both cords so that when the two cords are moved in opposite directions the angle of the slats change.  This allows you to change the amount of light and air allowed in through the window blinds.  There is normally a third string that runs through the center on both ends of the slats and attaches to the bottom slat.  This cord allows you to open and close the blinds completely.

Vertical blinds

Vertical blinds are most often used on doors as door blinds and larger windows.are normally made out of a more fabric like material, or metal.  Those are most often seen in vertical slat blinds because they cannot support themselves as well or are too heavy to lift up with thin cord.  Vertical blinds also tend to have wider slats.  This is mainly because they cover larger areas.  Wider slats also overlap more.  This gives the home owner more privacy.

Vertical blinds are normally fastened at one place.  At the top center of the slat.  The blinds are attached to a wheel that rests on a track that is attached above the doorway.  This allows the blinds to easily be moved back and forth.  Most of the time there is a draw string used to move them back and forth and a rod that allows the user to adjust the angle of the slats.

Make sure you think about where you are going to be putting the blinds.  Blinds tend to be over looked in kitchen and often go unrecognized till the las minute.  Make sure you blinds, verticle or otherwise, match the general feel of the kitchen.  I just finished putting in some verticle blinds in my kitchen, oddly enough they match the fridge.
