Black Out Blinds

About Black Out Blinds

Black out blinds are most well known for their use during the world wars during the bombing raids.  Most of us know about them from stories during world war two and the bombing raids on Britain.  The idea was that when the planes would fly over head looking for the lights of the city and it's building the blinds would completely block in the light and the bombers would not be able to see the towns or cities and would fly over or drop the bombs elsewhere.

Black Out Blinds Today

Today we do not have to worry about "black outs" as they were during the world wars.  Today we use them mainly for better tv or movie watching experiences.  Blackout blinds can be used for privacy too.  Because they are so good at keeping the sunlight out, due to their thickness and tight weave, they are also good at protecting your privacy when it is pitch black outside but bright as day inside.

Using Black Out Blinds

When using black out blinds or putting them up in a window you may want to sets of curtains or a par of blinds and a pair of curtains.  The one you use during the day just to limit the amount of direct sunlight and the other to pull over when you want complete darkness or seclusion.

Black Out Curtains

There is also such a thing as black out curtains.  If you prefer to have two sets of curtains instead of blinds and curtains or just blinds then you could use blackout curtains instead.  If you have two pairs of curtains you will likely want to have the lighter curtains between the window and the darker black out curtains.  You would do this by having two sets of curtain rods.  One closer to the wall and the other, slightly higher and farther away, but not too far away, otherwise they could let light in.  Although you most certainly can do it the other way around if you find you do not like the results or can't black out the room completely due to a gap.
