Skylight Blinds Guide
I know you put that skylight in so you could see the sky and the clouds and the birds and so that you could get some natural light in your house. But what about those hot days when you don't even want to think about the sun. Those scorching days when that skylight heats your counter tops and give you sun burn while you are inside? Or when the sky light lets in so much light that your eyes strain to keep the light out. Having skylight blinds does not mean you have to use them all the time or that they have to block out all the sun. On the contrary, these blinds can be more like sunglasses you wear when you go outside, it dims the sun down to a tolerable level so you can enjoy the outdoors. Not only that, but a lot of home energy is lost through it's windows. So on those cold winter nights the heat can tend to leave through the window, open or not. In this case too, skylight blinds can be quite handy.
Problems With Skylight Blinds
One problem you might have with the blinds is that they are out of reach and if something breaks or doesn't work right then it can be a real pain to fix, especially if you don't have a ladder that tall. Now in most cases breaks or malfunctions don't happen that often, and depending on who puts them in, you may be covered. Either way it is still a real pain. In addition one thing you can do to prevent the need for sky light blinds is to get thicker panes of glass put in to improve the insulation. Now this doesn't stop the sun from beating in at noon, but it can save money on electricity bills, of course only a professional can tell you exactly how much it will help or can give you more of an idea.
In General
In general skylights are a great thing to have. They can bring much light and warmth to the house and make it feel like a much more natural, open place. Now despite letting heat out, it may bring your lighting bill down a bit depending on how many other windows you have. Now if the sun is too much for you, you can get a tinted window. I am not talking tinted like a car window, it is just more opaque and looks a bit white. This ill keep out some of the suns light, but at the same time let un-tinted light in.
